The Wych Park Branch Library (Megalopolis, IL) Adult Department recognizes the emergence of graphic novels and comics as a vibrant medium of personal expression. The Adult Services librarians have, accordingly, developed the Representations of Mental Health in Comics special collection.
The accessibility of graphic novels as a medium enables more people to access materials documenting their specific lived experiences. This core collection of 15 works includes comics with depictions of bipolar disorder, anxiety, eating disorders, trauma, abuse, addiction, among others.
The collection exists as a public resource for our patrons, to shed light on sensitive issues affecting our community. The Representations of Mental Health in Comics special collection communicates the lived experiences of those featured.
